CHALLENGE IS NOW CLOSED

Innovation challenge

Sponsored by         Whirlpool

We believe dishwashers are ripe for disruption. Family dynamics are changing, urban living is on the rise, and the role of the kitchen and how meals are eaten are becoming increasingly fluid. Your challenge is to look at the world around you, keep the consumer close, and DISHrupt cleaning in the kitchen.

Challenge 1

Disrupt Within the Box

Our current configurations are your main guardrails. How would you re-imagine cleaning in the kitchen using the existing 18" or 24" wide, under-counter space that dishwashers use today?

Challenge 2

Blue Sky

The sky's the limit! How would you completely reimagine the role of cleaning in the kitchen? Would it involve new products, services, and aesthetics? In this space, everything is fair game. The only thing to consider is something needs to be cleaned.

Or does it?

Disrupt Within the Box

Electric cars, while similar on the outside, provide a completely disruptive experience in terms of performance and value compared to traditional automobiles. How might a technological shift in the kitchen impact cleaning performance and customer behavior?

There is No Box

Twenty years ago, very few people dreamed that automated cleaning in the house would be a reality. Today, robotic vacuums are increasingly common in American households.

Why do we need dishes that must be cleaned anyway? What would have to happen for no one to ever have to wash a dish again?

Disrupt Within the Box

Over 90% of American households either hand-wash dishes, or pre-rinse their dishes before placing them in the dishwasher. Yet a dishwasher is more efficient and effective than a hand washing and does not need rinsing. How can we innovate around this long-standing habit? Is there an opportunity to change consumer behavior?

There is No Box

Cleaning efforts have long focused on killing all microbes on affected surfaces. Is this the best approach for ideal human microbiome health?

Dishwashers have historically been immobile appliances under the sink in the kitchen. Must this always be the case?
